Just watched Godzilla Minus One with Splodge. Best genre flick ever!
No. Sorry. Not in the least sorry. It is. Good people lose honour, fight to regain it and build a modern, inclusive, forgiving democracy, defeating the monster that was their past. That's how you do national pride, not in nationalism but in pride of your humanity.
The look of the film, a digital stock that harks back to quality 35mm colour stock of the 1950s, when Godzilla was first made. (In B/W, so this one is an updating and has a budget.) The Netflix dub is a little stilted but the action on screen carries the story home like a Grand Final parade. The CGI never once has me questioning the story. As one who simply does not believe in monsters other than those humans create within themselves, I never once doubted the creature's role as Japan's past and willingly believed in the people of Japan defeating the monster of their past. And that is the story told here.
Doubt me, go watch it. If you doubt me after seeing it, turn your brain back on and go watch it again, in Japanese with English subtitles. (I'll be doing that this week, because Netflix need a better dubbing team, maybe top flight English speakers who live in the country that made the film. My only complaint.)
This monster epic gets 5 thermonuclear stars from me. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
